To most of us, summer is an opportunity to travel — explore new places, vacation with family and friends, or even have some “me time” in a tropical destination. Just because you’re taking a break from your normal routine doesn’t mean you have to ditch your healthy habits too. The good news is that you can still stay on track while making the most out of your trip! We’ve come up with 6 simple tips to help you stay active and make smart choices to have a fun-filled, guilt-free getaway.
1) Do your Research
You should be looking forward to your vacation, not worrying about whether you’ll be able to find a place to exercise or have access to healthy food. Don’t fret! By researching your destination ahead-of-time, you’ll be able to create a game plan. Find out if your hotel has a gym or pool; if not, search for a park to go for a run. Also, scope out healthy dining options nearby that offer lean proteins and veggies to resist the temptation of eating unhealthy food.
2) Don’t Skip Breakfast
Breakfast should always be on the top of your to-do list each day. Consuming a protein-rich breakfast will control your hunger, which will make it much easier to say no to any fried street-food/poolside snacks. Plus, it’ll fuel your body throughout the day so you don’t miss out on any of the vacay fun!
3) Sip Smart
It’s likely that when envisioning yourself on vacation, you think of kicking back with a cold drink in-hand. And that’s exactly what you should be doing! Just make sure to choose your drinks wisely — skip the Pina Colada and go for a light, low-sugar option, such as a coconut vodka soda. And remember to stay hydrated to help curb your cravings and keep your body energized.
4) Consume in Moderation
Leading a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean depriving yourself. You’re on vacation- you deserve to treat yourself! Every destination is famous for a certain type of food, so make sure you allow yourself to experience it. On the days that you plan to indulge more than usual, keep the rest of your food intake light and healthy.
5) Opt for Walking
Instead of calling a cab, why not use your own legs? You’ll burn extra calories while saving some bucks. By walking, you’ll get to experience life as a local in the destination, which is far more exciting than riding in a car.
6) Plan a daily athletic activity
No matter where you’re vacationing, you’ll have access to athletic activities- biking, hiking, swimming, surfing. Planning a daily activity is a win-win; you’ll have so much fun that you won’t even realize you’re exercising!
Above everything else, don’t forget that you’re on vacation. It’s a time for you to unwind and rejuvenate, not stress over staying in shape. With our 6 tips and planning in advance, you’ll have all the tools you need to maintain healthy habits while keeping your mind at ease.
